The Coastal Pacific route reopened in December 2018 after two years of track reconstruction following the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake, which displaced sections of the Main North Line by several metres and buried others beneath landslides.
Engineers rerouted 13 kilometres of track inland through Parnassus and Waipara, raising embankments and reinforcing tunnels to withstand future seismic events. The 178-kilometre journey between Christchurch and Picton now includes the 98-kilometre coastal stretch from Waipara to Ōaro, where the rail corridor hugs the Pacific shoreline within 20 metres of the tideline for extended intervals. Passengers witness fur seal colonies on rocky outcrops at Okiwi Bay, gannet nesting sites on the cliffs near Haumuri Bluffs, and the Kaikōura Ranges rising abruptly from sea level to 2,600-metre peaks within five kilometres of the coast.
The service departs Christchurch Railway Station on Troup Drive at 07:00 daily between October and April, with reduced frequency during winter months. Carriages feature panoramic windows that extend into the roofline, allowing unobstructed views of the Seaward Kaikōura Range to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. The northbound train stops at Kaikōura station at approximately 09:50, giving passengers a 2-hour-50-minute window to reach the township before whale-watching operators begin their midday departures. Most visitors continue to Picton or return south by coach, though an increasing number now use the rail connection as an entry point for multi-day wildlife itineraries based in Kaikōura itself.
Historically, the coastal rail corridor served as the primary freight link between Christchurch and Blenheim, transporting wool, timber, and frozen meat from inland stations to the port at Lyttelton. Passenger services expanded in the 1950s, but competition from State Highway 1 reduced demand until tourism revived the route in the 1990s. Today the christchurch to kaikoura train carries approximately 35,000 passengers annually, with international visitors comprising 72 per cent of ridership. The route's reinstatement after the earthquake required 120 million NZD in repairs and realignment work, funded jointly by KiwiRail and the New Zealand Transport Agency. Engineers installed rock-fall detection systems at 14 high-risk zones and constructed new sea walls at Goose Bay and Oaro to protect the formation from storm surge. The line now serves as both a transport corridor and a demonstration of resilience engineering in tectonically active coastal terrain.
